The World’s Most Unusual Hotels – Above Ground and Below

When many of us go away for a business trip or take the family on vacation we choose to stay in a motel or hotel. Depending upon our length of visit, location of the visit, cost, amenities, accessibility of other attractions and a host of other factors come into play when we make our decision about where to stay. Most hotels or motels offer regular amenities such as single or double beds, shower facilities, coffeemaker in room and other perks of a hotel stay such as laundry facilities, in-hotel restaurants, room service and more to make your stay comfortable. However, in recent years, hotels have started to appear in the most unusual locations. Hotels have started to appear as ice hotels, tree hotels, cave hotels and even hotels made in shoes!

These hotels offer patrons lodging in very unique settings to make the stay memorable. The following is a sample of some of the most unusual and unique lodging experiences in the world:

Treehouse Hotels – many hotel patrons would like to have views of the treetops. However, treehouse hotels take it a step further by giving customers a room with a view from a tree. These types of hotels are built into the trees utilizing the natural environment to give hotel patrons a better sense of living in nature. These hotels are available in Africa, Brazil and other areas that give patrons the opportunity to view nature.

Ariau Amazon Towers – information on the hotel that is located among the treetops of the Amazon Rainforest providing visitors with breathtaking views.

Ice Hotels – one of the most famous unique hotels is the Ice Hotel in Sweden. The hotel including all guest rooms are created from ice. The hotel is run during the winter months, and after the summer meltdown needs to be rebuilt. The experience of staying in one of the world’s ice hotels is truly a unique travel experience for patrons.

The Ice Hotel of Sweden – official website of the first man-made hotel that was created from ice, located in Sweden and operating from December through April.

Gamirasu Cave Hotel – information on the hotel in Turkey which is built into a natural cave.

Bunker Hotels – with the Cold War at an end and the need for nuclear bunkers at a minimum, these unused facilities have gotten a second life. Some hotel operators have turned these bunkers into hotels. Visitors are reminded of these original intent of the bunkers but can enjoy all the comforts of a regular hotel.

Swiss Bunker Hotel – interesting article about the no frills hotel opening inside an abandoned bunker.

Garden Hotels – typically garden hotels are different from other unique hotels covered here. Visitors do not sleep in gardens, but instead they are located at properties with beautiful gardens from the past and are converted into hotels. What makes this a memorable property is not the hotel, but the outstanding gardens in the surrounding area.

Gravetye Manor – example of a garden hotel that has an exceptional garden and is a fine hotel.

Landmark Hotels – some hotel operators have created hotels that resemble existing landmarks. Hotels have been made from libraries, jails and other famous buildings. These unique hotels provides visitors with a different perspective of existing buildings. And, fortunately for many of us, it will be the first time spending a night in jail.

Spending a night or two at a different type of hotel can be fun. These types of hotels can provide visitors with a new perspective on the natural beauty of the Earth and wonder at a man-made structure. While patrons of these hotels are foregoing the normal amenities that we have come to expect, it is more than made up for it in the experience that is received. Here are a few more links to sites with information about other unique hotels:

Aloft New York Brooklyn

Aloft continues its invasion of NYC boroughs with the opening of the Aloft New York Brooklyn. The hotel occupies prime land in downtown Brooklyn adjacent to a brand new Sheraton hotel – both brands belong to Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

But the 24-story, 176-room Aloft is not really in competition with the Sheraton, or most any other hotel in Brooklyn, for that matter.

It occupies a place of its own, targeting the Gen-Y cheapskate in geek’s clothing. In their own words, Aloft calls it “style at a steal.”

Brian McGuinness, senior VP of specialty select brands for Starwood, says that, “For the Gen Y-minded Aloft guest, who brings a real appreciation of what’s next in design and tech, a Brooklyn location makes an ideal home base for exploring New York, and we’re eager to share it with them.”

Well, share this – Like the Aloft Harlem, this one too offers smart check-ins with RFID technology. The entire hotel is a free wi-fi zone, and you can print from your room using their internet-based printing system. Every room also has plug & play, a one-stop connectivity solution which can link all your electronic gizmos to the 42″ flat-panel HDTV.

The guest rooms offer nine-foot ceilings and oversized windows to create the ‘a-loft’ look, and the effect is enhanced by the plush platform bed. The bed hogs so much space it makes the work desk and chair seem dinky by comparison.

Like the other Aloft hotels, this one too has a re:charge gym and splash – the indoor pool, a re:mix lounge and the 24/7 re:fuel for a quick bite.

The two-story lobby atrium offers the w xyz bar which opens at 5 pm daily and promises live entertainment, so it’s going to be a popular hang-out soon enough. There’s also the Sky Bar Night Club and Lounge - a roof terrace bar with views of the Manhattan and Brooklyn skylines.

Their lowest standard rate is $199, but the hotel has a grand opening offer with rates from $169 per night. The offer includes triple SPG points, in-room movie credit, two cocktails at w xyz bar, and $10 food and beverage credit. Book by August 31, 2011 for stays through December 30, 2011.
