Aruba’s Marriott Surf Club – It’s All About the Lazy River and Pool

The Marriott Surf Club in Aruba

Aruba’s Marriott Surf Club has a lazy river. Need I say more? To be honest, I can’t actually say too much more, since the hubby and I sort of, well, snuck in to the lazy river on our recent trip to Aruba. Totally worth the risk of getting caught! The pool that’s connected to the lazy river is awesome as well. It has a gorgeous waterfall and a slide, but we didn’t want to draw too much attention to ourselves. As difficult as it is to “tuck away” a property as large as this Marriott, the amazing thing about it is that, when you’re walking around the hotel, it’s easy to forget that busy Palm Beach is just steps away. The grounds felt secluded, protected and private when I walked around, despite all of the hotel guests. It was lovely.

That being said, you are in Aruba, and you’ll want to get off the property at some point. This Marriott is located on Palm Beach, and there’s a lot going on right around there. The hotel’s very close to the dock that the Jolly Pirates snorkel tour starts at, and you’ll have a wide selection of water sports to choose from, too. You can play sand tennis on the property, which looked like lots of fun! There’s always a party of some sort on Palm Beach, and the people watching is the best on the island. Restrooms and food are always within easy reach, too, which is a nice alternative to the island’s other beaches that lack basic amenities.

Not to harp about the lazy river pool…but it’s pretty neat. Keep your eyes peeled for Ralph the Really Big Iguana (that’s what we named him). He sits on the rocks above the lazy river, just watching everyone float by. And if you make your way up to the hot tub, he’ll watch you soak from the tree tops. Bet you haven’t seen that at any other Marriott you’ve stayed in!

Like I said, we didn’t have a chance to check out the rooms, but the lobby area and the grounds were immaculate. The Marriott Surf Club is likely not the place you want to stay at if you’re on a tight budget — but if you aren’t, I’d say it’s a really solid choice. Very family friendly and not at all stuffy — all the staff we interacted with were friendly and helpful. I almost felt bad that we snuck in! Almost.

IF YOU GO: Probably best not to sneak in like we did. Next time, we’re going to try to stay at The Marriott. It’s not cheap, but the amenities are amazing. Take full advantage of them!

Budget Hotels On the Beach in The Hague’s Scheveningen

While The Netherland’s Scheveningen is technically a part of The Hague area (or Den Haag, if you’re Dutch), the residents of this “city by the sea” tend to consider it their own, separate town.  Here is where you’ll find the 11 kilometers of coastline that is host to many Polar Bears.  Not the four-legged, furry variety, mind you, but rather those adventurous people who are crazy enough to swim in ice cold waters.

Even if you’re not up for a chilly dip, locals and tourists alike praise the beach at Scheveningen for it’s breathtaking views and relaxing atmosphere.   If you’re headed to The Hague, check out these budget Scheveningen hotels that offer great access to the beach and Boardwalk at budget-friendly prices.

Curacao Marriott Beach Resort and Emerald Casino, Caribbean

Stunning scenery and popular tourist attractions are certainly part of any vacation, but truly memorable travel requires delving beneath the sanitized facade presented to tourists. Sampling authentic cuisine, striking up conversations with locals, and learning about the folklore of a place are just some of the ways to enhance the travel experience. This can be a daunting task, especially when staying at upscale resorts, where the goal is to make guests feel comfortable by surrounding them with familiar food and accommodations.

Fortunately, during a recent press trip to Curaçao I was hosted by the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort and Emerald Casino, which provides the best of both worlds. Because the Marriott was the only branded property on this tiny Caribbean island for many years, locals regard it with a great deal of pride and a symbiotic relationship developeded between the resort and the community. In keeping with Marriott’s local and International ‘Spirit to Serve’ initiative, the resort participates in events Read More »

Visiting the Netherlands at the Golden Tulip – Leiden Centre

Golden-Tulip

Beautiful Golden Tulip - Leiden Centre, The Netherlands

Keeping with my posts themed after great tulip-viewing accessible hotels in the Netherlands, the Golden Tulip – Leiden Centre hotel is a dramatic hotel just minutes from some of the best tulip and flower fields in all of Europe. The facade (see photo) caught my attention immediately, and then seeing the photographs of the inside of a room solidified it to me: this is a must-check-out hotel to stay in Leiden. I’ve been the the Netherlands and to other places in Europe. They’re not really knows for their spacious, affordable hotel rooms. The Golden Tulip – Leiden Centre is the exception to the small room rule.
