The Westin Diplomat Resort and Spa in Hollywood, Florida

Westin Diplomat

The Westin Diplomat in Hollywood, FL

When most people think of Hollywood, they picture movie stars in California. However, on the other side of the country, Florida has a Hollywood of its own, and the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa is one of its celebrities.

For one thing, it’s a striking building, and recently had a green makeover. In the spring of 2007, this AAA Four Diamond resort began implementing eco-friendly practices, including water-conserving toilets, paperless check-in and check-out, recycling programs for the guests to use, as well as using recycled materials for construction. But, a pretty exterior and a green focus isn’t enough for most folks to spend from $200 to $600 on a room, right? No problem, because there are plenty more reasons to visit this hotel.

For one, Hollywood itself is located in South Florida, which means you have warm weather most days of the year. And it’s good thing — not only is the Diplomat right on the beach, but it also has several outdoor pools, including one with a see-through glass bottom (which you can check out now on their Dip Cam) with a waterfall leading to the lagoon-style pool below. With poolside cabanas, cold towel service, and a poolside bar and grill, you might not want to go back to your room.

The view from the 33rd floor

The view from the 33rd floor

You might want to leave the beach chair, however, to play a little golf at the Diplomat Country Club Golf Course (South Florida’s only 5-star rated golf course), or relax with a service at the spa. Of course, you’ll need to grab a bite to eat, too, and depending on your mood, you can choose from any of nine different dining options.

So, you’ve got great weather, incredible luxury, and eco-friendliness, all in one hotel. Sounds like a pretty swell winter getaway to me.

San Francisco – Five Green Hotels

San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge

San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge

San Francisco is a town with a well known reputation for being “green” — from fleets of Prius taxis to every kind of organic, natural and free-range fare –  the eco-traveler is right at home in the City by the Bay.

This extends to the selection of hotels as well. There are so many that it’s almost impossible to pick just five, so for each of the hotels here I included a “Green Claim to Fame” that earned them a place on this top picks list.

The Orchard Garden Hotel
466 Bush Street, San Francisco, California 94108
Toll Free: 888-717-2881, Phone: 415-399-9807, Fax: 415-393-9917
The Orchard Hotel
665 Bush Street, San Francisco, California 94108
Toll Free: 1-888-717-2881,  Phone: 415-362-8878,  Fax: 415-362-8088

Green Claim to Fame
The Orchard Hotel and sister-property the Orchard Garden Hotel set the standard for green hotels – literally. The Orchard properties were the first in California to receive LEED certification, and just the fourth in the world.

One of the many environmentally friendly innovations you’ll find these hotels is a guest room key card system that reduces electricity consumption by an estimated 20%. When a guest enters the room, he or she activate the light and heating systems by inserting the key card into a wall unit. When the key is removed, the systems automatically shut off.

In addition to deluxe green accommodations, guests at the hotel can arrange for eco-friendly services like airport transfers in Toyota Prius Hybrids, receive discounts on rental bikes and eco-tours, and peruse copies of the Greenopia Guide, “the urban dweller’s guide to ‘green’ living.”

Hotel Triton
342 Grant Avenue at Bush Street, San Francisco, CA  94104
Reservations: 800-800-1299, Hotel: 415-394-0500, Fax: 415-394-0555

Green Claim to Fame
The Hotel Triton is a member of the Kimpton Family of Hotels, all of which adhere to the strict “EarthCare“   environmental practices. Additionally, the Triton was one of the earliest green hotels, opening the “Eco 7th Floor” in 1994. All of the room on this floor have water saving devices, water filtration systems, and air filtration/purifiers. The hotel recycles 60% of its waste, has recycling receptacles in all guest rooms, and all of their cleaning products are non-toxic and environmentally safe. They also offer 25% off valet parking for hybrid certified vehicles.

W San Francisco
181 3rd Street · San Francisco, California 94103
Phone: 415-777-5300

Green Claim to Fame
Although the W Hotel doesn’t do a lot of eco-promotion on their website, the San Francisco property is leading the way for the Starwood Chain to become greener. They are piloting in-room recycling bins on 6 floors, recycling 71% of waste, and exploring the installation of six wind turbines on the roof.

Hotel Carlton
1075 Sutter St., San Francisco, CA 94109
Reservations: 1-800-922-7586, Phone: 415-673-0242, Fax: 415-673-4904

Green Claim to Fame
The Hotel Carlton is the only hotel in San Francisco that can boast of having 105 solar panels on the roof. The property was recently certified as a Green Business by the City of San Francisco. It is also an environmentally responsible and carbon neutral hotel, partnering with Carbonfund.org. Their Green Environmental Policy Statement is posted on the website, and it highlights their extensive efforts to recycle, conserve and reduce toxic materials.

Best Western Tuscan Inn
425 N Point Street US San Francisco, California, 94133-1405, United States
Phone: 415-561-1100

Green Claim to Fame
You might not think the world’s largest hotel chain would be all that green, and admittedly the Best Western Tuscan Inn is not the greenest hotel in the city, but the combination of a fabulous location on Fisherman’s Wharf and environmentally friendly practices like in room recycling, organic food, composting, water conservation protocols, and their efforts to educate guests and staff earn them a place on this list.

A Guide to Green Hotels in San Francisco
Even if you don’t pick one of the hotels on this list for your next visit, you can be reasonably sure that almost every hotel in San Francisco is relatively green.

The city follows an aggressive recycling program, has a ban on plastic bags, and you won’t find Styrofoam take out containers anywhere — they’ve been banned too. Most hotels have water saving practices like only changing sheets and towels when you request them. And even if you don’t see a recycling bin in your room, it’s a pretty safe bet that the cleaning staff will get your cans to a blue bin.

Enjoy your trip, and remember that you bring your environmental citizenship with you when you travel, so make your choices wisely!

Romantic Hotels in New Jersey

Jersey City, New Jersey

Jersey City, New Jersey

I just caught an old episode of The Sopranos and I was once again struck by the fact that this city is almost always portrayed in such a negative light. Mafia, crime, rough neighborhoods…surely there must be some redeeming qualities to this city? It’s a silly question, because of course there are. Just take a look at some of romantic hotels I’ve found in New Jersey! Ok, so most of them aren’t in downtown Jersey, but they’re in the state.

The Queen Victorian Bed & Breakfast Inn is, quite frankly, the type of house which makes me feel as though I was born in the wrong century. It’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s in Cape May, a quaint and too perfect coastal town. You even get treated to afternoon tea, just like they do in England! Cape May is a very romantic town – you can stroll on the beach, walk amongst the dozens of antique stores and book stores or grab a bite to eat in a small cafe.

Up for a little gambling and nightlife excitement? The Borgata Hotel Casino could be perfect for your romantic getaway then. It’s one of Atlantic City’s newest casinos, and if you’re in New Jersey, Atlantic City is not to be missed. The Borgata is rumored to have a fabulous spa. If gambling is your thing, you’re in luck – plenty of games to choose from in the hotel itself, and if you want even more variety just step outside and explore the other hotels! I’ve heard the bathrooms are supposed to be very large, which earns huge points with me. There’s music playing underwater in the pool!

The Hyatt Regency Jersey City on the Hudson sounds intriguing as well. This hotel is more in the “nitty gritty city” but it’s got beautiful views of the Hudson and of New York City. It’s a solid four star hotel with a great restaurant on site, and you can take a ferry with your honey to go see the Statue of Liberty.

And when in Jersey…you can always take the “Sopranos Tour,” which takes you to some of the show’s most popular sites and landmarks. It’s a fun thing to do as a couple!

Romantic California Hotels

Grandpa's Room at Deetjen's in Big Sur

Deetjen's Big Sur Inn

California is a great place for vacations: beautiful beaches, serene forests, and sophisticated cities all packed into one gorgeous state.

If you’re on a trip with your honey, where should you stay? Here are a few options for romantic hotels in California:

Wine Country is high on the must-do list for lots of couples, but if you’ve tried to stay there, you know it can be exceptionally expensive. Best Western Sonoma Valley Inn is surprisingly affordable ($179 king bed rates in December, a steal ’round these parts) and centrally located in Sonoma, a perfect home base for your explorations. The rate includes complimentary breakfast and use of the pool and hot tub; better yet, the hotel is in walking distance of the town square, which has great restaurants.

For a romantic retreat in woody Big Sur, I recommend Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn, a charming retreat with furniture handmade by the Norwegian owner in the 1930’s. Each room is unique–we loved “Grandpa’s Room,” which felt like a tree house with a wood-burning stove and runs at $200 per night.

Way down the coast in Los Angeles, try the Omni Los Angeles’ “Sugar and Spice Package,” available through January 4. This includes 25% off your room rate (because worrying about money is anti-romantic!) and Mexican hot chocolate delivered to your room. Delish!

South Lake Tahoe Hotels

South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe is one of my favorite places to visit, no matter what the season. Even though I can’t ski to save my life, I’ve been there multiple times during winter to make snow angels or to admire the slopes from inside a toasty cabin while sipping a hot chocolate. There are quite a few South Lake Tahoe hotels to choose from when you visit — it all depends on what type of accomodation you’re looking for. There are small hotels, motels, condos and cabins to explore.

The Sunterra Lake Tahoe is a great choice if you are looking for a good resort in the area that’s closer to the marina at the lake and the casinos. (FYI: this resort is usually called the Lake Tahoe Vacaton Resort – for easier searching on the web.) If you’re thinking about this place, book early to try to snag a room with a view of beautifully serene Lake Tahoe, it’s definitely worth it. You can get studios up through large two bedroom suites. The hotel has been renovated, and many rooms are now equipped with jacuzzi tubs and flat screen TVs – all rooms have kitchens. The only downside to this property is that it’s a timeshare – so if you’re not a member, then chances are not great that you’ll get a room with a view…but it’s well worth the try.

Heavenly snow in Tahoe

Heavenly snow in Tahoe

For a hotel that has a more rustic feel to it, but still provides all the amenities a good resort should, try the Marriott Timber Lodge. A full renovation of this resort has just been completed, so no worries about construction noise. It’s situated in the middle of the new Heavenly Village with all the shops and casinos and restaurants, so that’s pretty cool. The best part? You’re about thirty steps away from the Heavenly Gondola, which takes you up to the slopes! A wide variety of rooms and suites can be reserved here and fireplaces and whirlpool tubs are available in the villas. A restaurant called Fire and Ice is on site, and it gets good reviews. Again, though, this place is a timeshare…so be forewarned. It’s a great place to stay, though.

You don’t have any interest in staying anywhere that’s affiliated with a timeshare, you say? I know. How about the Holiday Inn Express? It’s a very clean, comfortable and cozy hotel that’s set back from the road a bit so you aren’t bothered by any road noise. Free complimentary breakfast, people! This place is a great value, especially if you plan to be in the area for a week and you want to save some money. And you’re only 1/2 a mile from Heavenly ski resort and you’re very close to all the shops and restaurants in downtown South Lake Tahoe. Good deal!

It’s almost wintertime, and I’m starting to think about delicate snowfalls and crisp evergreens…I think I may be scheduling a trip out to South Lake Tahoe this year!

Hotels in Greenwich, Connecticut

Greenwich Connecticut church

Greenwich Connecticut church

I’m a teacher and tutor part time, and during my geography lesson a couple of days ago, my student asked “Why is Greenwich Connecticut so expensive?”

Good question! I’ve actually never been there, but from what I hear and see, it’s a stunningly beautiful place with ginormous multi-million dollar mansions, manicured lawns and very expensive stores. So this got me to thinking – is Greenwich a place I might enjoy visiting? Is it a good place to bring families? And what about the hotels?

At least now, when I’m in the mood for a particularly posh weekend, I know where to go!

Sometimes it’s fun to see what I could afford if I manage to win the lottery someday. I hypothesized that, given the price of real estate in Greenwich, hotels there would be budget-busters as well. And as it turns out I was right!

Hotels in Greenwich proper are beautiful and quite expensive, but you will be waited on hand and foot. After a little research, the first hotel that caught my eye was the magnificent Delamar Greenwich Harbor. Talk about posh! This place is a luxurious boutique hotel with 83 rooms located directly on the harbor. If you’re pinching pennies, book one of the cheapest rooms for $400 per night – you’ll get a view of the city, not of the harbor.

Really in the mood for splurging? How about the Belvedere Presidential Suite, for $1700! In all seriousness, though, if you can afford the luxury, the Delamar is absolutely top-notch. You are assinged a personal escort who will show you to your room, there’s a gorgeous spa and you can even park your yacht out front – so long as it’s less than 160 feet long.

Old Greenwich Connecticut Beach

Old Greenwich Connecticut Beach

Looking for slightly more modest accommodations? (Me too!) The Stanton House Inn is a charming, 100-year old house that has 21 individually decorated rooms and suites, all of which are full of character. Rates are $159-$259, and while you won’t be gushed over like at the Delamar, the staff is warm and friendly, the parking is free, and there’s an outdoor swimming pool that is perfect for the summer months. A complimentary breakfast is served either in your room or out on the lovely patio. This hotel is only a few minutes walk from the quaint shops in downtown Greenwich, too.

What if you’re looking for a hotel with more amenities than a smaller bed and breakfast, but you don’t want to completely empty your wallet? It looks like the Hyatt Regency in Greenwich could be a good compromise. I randomly picked some dates in April and was able to find a king bed room for about $150 per night, though some nights were more expensive than others. You do get a lot for your money, though – there’s a salon and spa, and indoor lap pool and jacuzzi, a well-equipped fitness center and a bar and restaurant on site. This Hyatt is definitely not a “budget” hotel, but for the area it appears to be a good value.

Thanksgiving Hotel Packages

A Feast of Turducken

A Feast of Turducken

Not all of us gather ’round the family hearth for Turkey Day. For some of my friends, it’s a tradition for their families to meet in a city convenient to people traveling from far-flung locations; when I moved across the country from my family, I stayed in my new home city because it was simply too expensive to fly.

So if you’re looking for a Thanksgiving hotel, where should you stay? Check out some of these great packages:

The pretty White Barn Inn and Spa in Kennebunkport, Maine offers a luxurious $477 per night double occupancy Thanksgiving package that includes Thanksgiving dinner for two, continental breakfasts, and afternoon tea. In this neck of the woods, watch out for Kennedys drunk on drumsticks and gravy!

In New Orleans, the Windsor Court Hotel t-day package includes one night of accommodation, a Thanksgiving buffet for two, and a glass of sparkling wine, starting at $319 for a junior suite. What are the chances that buffet includes some turducken?

For an unforgettable Thanksgiving in New York City, take advantage of the Paramount’s special–15% off a stay of two nights or 30% off a three-night stay. Then bundle up on Thanksgiving morning and head out to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Hotels in Niagara Falls, New York

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls, New York is one of the few “must see” places in the U.S. that I have yet to visit. I have no idea why I haven’t been yet, as it looks absolutely spectacular. So, since I’m a planner, I’ve decided to at least plot out which hotels I’ll stay in when I eventually do visit – which will hopefully be in the next year!

Niagara Falls is one of those places I wouldn’t mind visiting by myself, with friends or even on a romantic getaway. So, my hotel list takes this into account.

One of the hotels I came across that could definitely fit the bill for all three categories (well, at least definitely the first two) is the Sheraton. If I were to go by myself and needed a more budget friendly room, I’d probably check out the Sheraton on the Falls. It’s right across the street from the falls, though I’m still deciding if I’d want to to pay for a room with a view of the falls, which runs about $160 per night (though you can snag a partial falls view room for about $130 per night, which is not bad at all).

Or…I could just book a room that has a city view for about $110 per night. I think I’d be cool with visiting the falls during the day and saving some money for a nice dinner or whatnot. This place even has rooms that have showers with floor to ceiling windows that look out onto the falls! There’s also a heated pool, a fitness center, and it’s connected to Casino Niagara. Ok, I really want to go see Niagara Falls now.

Sheraton on the Falls in Niagara

Sheraton on the Falls in Niagara

As for a Niagara Falls hotel which falls more easily into my (fairly picky) romantic category, the Lions Head Bed & Breakfast looks like a sure winner. I don’t have anything against large chain hotels, but they’re just so…large. The Lions Head has only four beautiful rooms housed in a gorgeous Craftsman style bed and breakfast, and it’s located only minutes from Niagara Falls. Two of the rooms overlook the Niagara Gorge. The breakfasts are elaborately prepared, and my mouth seriously watered looking at the pictures. Wine tours and tastings can be arranged at any of the 45 wineries in the area…now we’re talking!

And then, the Renaissance Fallsview Hotel seems like it would work out nicely. Many of the rooms have views of the Falls, and the hotel offers all sorts of packages ranging from family packages to romantic packages to entertainment packages. The basic rooms with a view of the Falls run about $100 per night, though the description reads a view of the “Niagara River.” The pictures seem to show the rooms having a view of the actual Falls though – the more expensice rooms definitely do. Some of the rooms are whirltub suites which sounds kind of fun!

One thing I didn’t realize was how beautiful the Falls appear to be at night. That changes my thinking about whether I want a room with a view of the Falls or not, because they looks really stunning lit up at night. At least I have some good choices to think about now. Niagara, here I come!

Romantic Hotels in Ohio

Columbus Ohio

Columbus Ohio

Are you craving a romantic weekend getaway in Ohio? I’ve put together a few good choices from Columbus and Cleveland. Hopefully these will be enough to get your started! I’ve tried to select hotels for different budgets.

If you’d like to stay in Columbus, try The Westin. The beds here are rumored to be extremely comfortable, and the entire whole has the feel of an older, classy hotel – the lofted lobby is a grand space (check out the stained glass windows and crystal chandeliers.) There may not be a pool or hot tub, but tennis courts and golf courses are nearby. Or, you might enjoy the Short North Bed & Breakfast. This charming Victorian  hotel is located in the middle of the quaint and hip Short North Arts District. There are seven beautiful rooms to choose from, all of which range from $130-$150 per night. While this hotel does not have “big hotel amenities,” it does make up for this with a ton of ambiance and charm.

Cleveland Ohio

Cleveland Ohio

Staying in Cleveland? If you’d like to stay someplace a little glamorous and where you’ll be pampered, definitely look into the Ritz-Carlton. You’ll have to pay between $250-$500 per night, but you’ll be surrounded by comfortable elegance and outstanding service. Marble bathrooms, twice-daily maid service and a massage parlor are just some of this beautiful  hotel’s perks. It’s located in the heart of downtown Cleveland, too. If you’d like a more budget friendly romantic hotel in Cleveland, you might enjoy the charming Stone Gables Bed & Breakfast. You’ll be less than a mile from downtown Cleveland, and yet you’ll feel removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. Some of this Victorian hotel’s five rooms have jacuzzi tubs and all have satellite television. The gourmet breakfasts are said not to be missed! Rooms here range from $100-$200 per night.

Best Las Vegas Hotels

Las Vegas is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Here is our list of the best hotels in Sin City.  Find out where the best places to stay and play are. We’ve chosen seven of the top hotels based on elegance and luxury as well as style and comfort.

The Venetian Hotel

The Venetian – Take a trip to Italy without leaving the States.  The Venetian is a romantic experience that surrounds you with the feelings of Venice.

From the moment you walk through the doors of The Venetian you will immediately look up at the magnificent artwork that is very tastefully displayed on the ceiling.  The suites are luxurious and elegant from the plush beds to the over sized baths available in the Venetian Piazza Suites.

Experience the Canal Shoppes and 19 remarkable restaurants including the world famous Tao.  Enjoy an infused margarita at Taqueria Cañonita while overlooking the Canal and listening to the Italian Opera Singers. Watch the street performers in the Grand Canal and forget that you are actually inside.  The ceiling in the grand Canal area is a sky and makes you feel like it’s the afternoon no matter what time of day it is.

The Venetian offers two pools, Tao Beach (for 21 and older only), more restaurants and shopping that you could frequent in a weekend.  The atmosphere at The Venetian is all elegance all the time.

Bellagio

The Bellagio – Famous for its daily fountain show, The Bellagio raised the bar on the Las Vegas Strip when it became a AAA Five Diamond Award Winner.  With almost 4,000 hotel rooms and suites the Bellagio will not disappoint.

If you are looking for an upscale resort, the Bellagio is mostly recommended for the 18 and over crowd.  With an 18 and over policy in place, The Bellagio is not for the young children.

The Bellagio also offers a breathtaking Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. The Bellagio employs 140 horticulturists to maintain the gardens and their theatrically arranged gazebos and ponds that are displayed to fit each season of the year.

The nightlife at The Bellagio offers sophistication and style with six nightclubs to choose from.  Enjoy fine dining or casual eats at The Bellagio before you venture off to watch “O” Cirque Du Soleil.

Wynn Las VegasThe Wynn – Upon entering the Wynn you will be greeted by a lovely lit gazebo that tourists seem to line up to take pictures in front of.  There is a welcoming Parasol Bar located just outside the registration area with some of the best martinis in Vegas. There is also a Parasol bar located downstairs where you can watch the nightly show that takes place with fun music, lights and a large frog.

The suites at the Wynn are amazing to say the least.  There is a lot of red in the decor and the best thing about the Wynn is that there are two sinks in the bathroom, a tub and a shower.  The Wynn is located across from the mall and has walkways easily accessible for tourists to cross the street and do some shopping.

The Wynn is home to Blush and SW Steakhouse which are two of the best night clubs and steak houses in Las Vegas.

In addition to nightlife, The Wynn offers an 18 hole golf course which includes a club house, practice green, caddies and golf carts.

Palazzo Las VegasThe Palazzo – As the newest neighbor to The Venetian, The Palazzo hit the Vegas strip in early 2008.  Located directly across the street from TI and in between the Wynn and The Venetian, there is no lack of luxury surrounding it.

Home to a 20,000 Lamborghini dealership and a Turkish Bath House, The Palazzo offers some unique activities that are not found in other Las Vegas Resorts.

The suites at The Palazzo are luxurious and comfortable.  You can expect to find elegant touches such as a comfy bath robe and slippers, a jetted tub in The Palazzo Siena Suites and an flat screen TV in the bathrooms.

The Palazzo takes pride in its effort to be green.  In April of 2008 they earned a LEED certificate (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).  Some environmentally friendly features include the one touch master light switch as you exit your hotel room. Guest suites with built in sensors to know if you are in the suite or not that adjust temperature automatically. An expansive solar heating system for the pools tops the list of the environmentally friendly hotel.

With all the shopping and restaurants The Palazzo offers along with its key location on the Las Vegas strip, you really can’t go wrong by staying and playing here.

The Palms – The Palms Casino has become synonymous with Hugh Hefner and his Playmates.  It is likely to be the most sultry hotel in Las Vegas.

Located off the strip, the Palms has themed “fantasy” suites available to rent for anywhere from $3000 to $40,000 dollars per night.

Want to party like a rock star? Get yourself invited to one of these outrageous parties and enjoy your evening in rooms themed after the Playboy Club, a bowling alley, a basketball court, a strip club and more.

The Palms has the Playboy Club Casino located at the top of the hotel and actual wading pools that hang over the edge of the hotel in the Playboy suites.

Rain in the Desert is located at the bottom of the Palms and the music and entertainment there is perfect for a company or conference party or event.

At the top of the Palms guests can enjoy the view from the Ghost Bar.  Try dancing on a large sheet of plexiglass on a dance floor that hangs over the edge of the hotel and looks straight down.

There are two towers in the Palms and all of the fun stuff is located in the new one.  An evening in one of the fantasy suites will be sure to be a night you will never forget.
