Disney is about to kick off work on a new 2000-room hotel for Walt Disney World named the Art of Animation Resort, which will be designed to offer the look and feel of some of Disney’s most famous animation movies.

The resort will be built on 65 acres across a lake from Disney’s Pop Century Resort. The hotel is scheduled for a phased opening through 2012, and will be Disney World’s first new hotel in seven years.

Out of the 2000 rooms, 1120 will be large suites big enough to house a family or group of six. Coupled with the 864 conventional hotel rooms, the hotel’s true capacity is actually more closer to a 2800 room hotel.

The design is based on Disney’s animation movies, with the same bright colors used in the movie backgrounds and four distinct groups of rooms offering themes based on The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Finding Nemo and Cars.

Each group will have its own courtyard, and each courtyard will feature an icon from the movie it is based on. So the Little Mermaid courtyard will have a giant 35-foot statue of King Triton holding his all-powerful trident.

The hotel rooms are further divided into 10 wings, with a separate building for the lobby and restaurants. The low nightly room rates will make Art of Animation a ’value’ hotel.

Disney World currently offers four existing value accomodation options - the Pop Century Resort and the three All-Star resorts – All-Star Sports, All-Star Movies and All-Star Music.
