Every year the Kentucky Derby is held on the first week of May. It’s a fancy event that requires big lady hats and the copious drinking of Mint Juleps. If you’ve always dreamed of attending this historic horse race, consider taking advantage of the crazy deals you can get on flights, and splurge on a luxurious visit to Louisville. This could be your lucky year!
If you’re looking for the classic, old school hotel experience, check out The Seelbach Hilton. It’s on the National Register of Historic places, and the ballroom inspired Tom and Daisy Buchanan’s wedding in the Great Gatsby.
The Seelbach is doing major renovations on the property, which was built in 1905. It’s worth a visit even during a non-Derby time of year! Figure your room will be upwards of $200/night, unless you’re there at a very off-time. Like Monday-Wednesday the first week of February.
Since the Seelbach is almost certainly going to be booked solid, if you have your heart set on a Grand Hotel visit, you can also try the Brown Hotel. Located in the theater district, with just as much opulence and history, they offer a special Kentucky Derby package.
It starts at $4,000. But hey, it’s for three nights and includes a welcome gift and Sunday Brunch!
If you’re more modern and avant garde, the 21c Museum Hotel is probably more your speed.
Think southern hospitality, modern art and delightful luxury.
The 21c Museum Hotel has a whole Derby Program, with a list of 21 things to do during Derby Season. Again, most — like sampling chocolate nut Derby Pie — are worth doing year round! They don’t publish their Derby package rate, but they do have some other delightful sounding packages in the couple hundred a night range.
Here are some more luxury hotels to choose from as well.
