Athens is suddenly looking a lot greener and hip, with the opening of the Hotel Indigo Athens University Area. The five-story, 130-room hotel is all set to achieve LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council later this year.

Hotel Indigo
The Indigo will be the first private development in Athens to achieve LEED certification and one of only five hotels in the nation to achieve Gold status, and also the first IHG hotel (IHG operates 4300 hotels in nearly 100 countries) to be awarded the LEED Gold certification.

And their state-of-the-art music venue will host intimate musical performances by regionally and nationally acclaimed artists, including Christopher Cross, Shawn Mullins, Kim Carnes, and Edwin McCain.

We visited the Blue Indigo last night, and sadly will not return. We found the drinks to be overpriced, a glass of wine only constituted a third of a normal glass size. We were told that it was because “They pour carefully”. The appetizers were also priced high, yet arrived on large plates with miniscule servings. We were afraid to order dinner, knowing that we would pay through the nose and then have to go elsewhere to finish filling up. In all honesty, the decor was quite nice though. I would recomend this establishment only if you are not hungry and do not want a drink.
The Indigo in Athens is pretty cool. Classy, but laid-back. No problems with drink sizes at THIS location. (I guess they know that in a college town like Athens, you can’t skimp on the drinks!) Hotel is pretty chic, but the staff is very laid-back. Cool bar with an awesome patio (outdoor couches, cabanas, fire pit) & another classier bar downstairs called the Rialto Room. Pretty cool place in a really cool town. Different.
And I also ran into tennis greats Melanie Oudin & Serena Williams there….so that was pretty cool. I mean, if THEY are staying there for their tennis exhibition, it must be pretty cool!
Beautifully done and what an idea. More hotels like this one should make the effort to go green, I applaud this hotel, great job
