4th of July overnighter to see the fireworks

After a side trip through the nearby ravaged Avalon Fire area to see what we could learn about defensible areas, we soon arrived at the Avalon Lodge for a one night stay. The Avalon is a small intimate setting where you felt like you were going back in time a bit. This is an older Tahoe property built in 1965. The 8,000 sq ft facility with 20 (not 31) units sits on a small 20,000 sq ft lot in a lodging area with varying types of buildings lining the streets dotted with tall pine trees. AAA rates it 3 stars as does Hotwire but I would give it 2 ½. The door knob (with inscription plate) to the tiny reception area made me smile, telling me this place was special even though it was showing its age in different ways.
