On the south shore of the Island of Molokai, Kaunakakai is the perfect “home base” for island explorers because of its central location. If you are looking for bright lights and a lot of action, then this is not the place for you. In this serene settlement where locals still leave their doors unlocked and the hotels are fabulous cottages, you will find instead, a refuge. Kaunakakai, Molokai’s largest settlement, is the place to go if you just want to relax in a Kaunakakai hotel.

You can easily relax at the Pub’s O Hoku (Hill of Stars) Ranch in a cottage by the sea, or surrounded by glorious gardens and spectacular ocean views. From your cottage on a hilltop you can actually see the island of Maui in the distance. This is the perfect Kaunakakai hotel for retreats and workshops.

Another great Kaunakakai hotel is A'ahi Place. A tropical paradise of fruit trees and flowers is your private retreat. The location makes getting to the sandy beach easy, as well as accessing the overlook of Kalaupapa. They serve a continental breakfast at this Kaunakakai hotel with fresh grown coffee, on your schedule. If you prefer cooking your own meals, the cottage has a full kitchen. Rates are excellent.

Be sure and visit Kanemitsu Bakery while visiting Kaunakakai. You will find the bakers of Molokai’s famed Moloka`i Hot Bread. Be prepared not to have telephone or television at many of the Kaunakakai hotels. Many also do not accept credit  cards.  Shopping is available, but is somewhat limited.
