Merrillville, a town in Ross Township in Indiana has a population of around 31,000 people. The city actually traces its roots back to 1834 when the Potawatomi Indians were its occupants; they named it the McGwinn Village. Since then, Merrillville has flourished. It is also interesting to note that Merrillville can be described as a "well-off" area because the median family income here is pegged at around $56,355 as of 2000.
Its strategic location in the east-central part of the Lake County makes it a favorite destination among families who love the outdoors. Merrillville offers a lot of recreational and even cultural opportunities in its 14 parks. Travelers can also enjoy boating, swimming, fishing, and picnicking. Other attractions you should not miss include the Star Plaza Theater which showcases different performances every year. If you want to get a glimpse of the city's real culture, you should stop by the Merrillville-Ross Township Historical Museum because you will understand why the city is what it is today.
