The first settlers of the Old Orchard Beach arrived in 1657 and were believed to be led by Thomas Rogers who called the place “Garden by the Sea.” This endearing name reflects the impression of many people who come and see the summer resort potential of the place. But the name used by sailors, “Old Orchard,” which refers to a landmark above the sandy long beach, was retained by the people when Maine separated from Massachusetts as an independent State. Nevertheless, the attraction of the place remained and the first public inn was built in 1820. Since then numerous Old Orchard Beach hotels, motels, lodgings, and resorts were established. And the town is one of the country’s major vacation destinations.
Aside from the gorgeous beach, the Old Orchard Beach has other tourist attractions, such as miniature golf courses, parks, and exciting town events. The Pirate’s Cove, is not just a regular miniature golf course. It is an adventure golf course with impressive theme park settings. Golfers must conquer the challenges of footbridges, waterfalls, and caves. The Ferry Beach State Park is a 117-acre land that has black gum trees, white sand beach, and numerous nature trails. And some of the town events include an annual Seaside Art Festival in July, weekly concerts at the park during August, and a Tri-State Fishing Tournament in September. Travelers must check the Old Orchard Beach Chamber of Commerce for the town’s year-round activities.
