Located between the northern slope of the impressive Belknap
Mountain range and the southern shore of the beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee,
Gilford was established as a town in 1812, although the first settlers came 35
years earlier. It was an agricultural town at first but during summers, the Lake
attracted many tourists. The farmers accommodated the tourists and, as time
went by, other industries, especially tourism, flourished. Today, Gilford is a
diverse community. Many Gilford hotels, inns, and other types of Gilford
accommodations were built. Tourists come to Gilford to do cross-country skiing
and jumping and this is why Gilford earned the name “snow train” but the
official motto for this town is “Recreation Center of New Hampshire.” Aside
from skiing, there are many things to do
in Gilford, such as biking, kayaking, paddle boating, skating, golfing, and
camping. If the Gilford vacation is also a family vacation, the family can go
to the Ellacoya State Beach
and RV Park. Here, the kids can enjoy swimming and the family can stay in
an RV. Gilford is also community that is proud of its history. In New
Hampshire, it is the only town that is named after a Revolutionary War battle,
the Battle of Guilford House. Thus, another thing to do in Gilford is to visit museum buildings.
