Top Flemington Things to Do
The City of Flemington in New Jersey is the vacation destination for travelers who love history. About 60% of the buildings in Flemington are included in the National Register of Historic Places. The Main Street, which has been described as the prettiest in the country, is successful in blending together the influences of Greek revival and architecture of the Victorian era. There numerous antique shops and art galleries. But the most fascinating for history buffs is the Hunterdon County Courthouse. It is the place where the so-called “Trial of the Century” happened. The trial happened in 1935 when Bruno Richard Hauptmann was accused of kidnapping and killing the baby son of Charles Lindbergh. The courtroom was jam-packed with spectators and outside the courthouse, thousands of people were gathered. They waited patiently for the ringing of the bell in the cupola. This ringing of the bell indicated that the jury has reached a verdict. It was probably one of the first trials that gained public attention. Today, the same courtroom still has the witness chair and jury’s chairs that were all hand-carved. For those who wanted to relive this historic event, there are occasional reenactments. There is, of course, no need to stay hours on end outside the courthouse because there are numerous Flemington hotels and lodgings. The favorite of locals is the Main Street Manor Bed and Breakfast. It is obviously located on Main Street and touts a distinctly Victorian architecture.
