Not up to HI standards

Recently had the chance to spend 4 days in NYC on short notice and the HI hostel seemed like a great way to do it cheaply. Call well ahead - I made reservations two weeks ahead and all they had left were 12 bed dorms. First, the good news: - where else can you get three nights in a safe, bug-free bed in Manhattan for $120? - good security, felt very safe coming/going and in the hostel. - large lockers beside each bed. - friendly ... Decent place to stay at a great price

This was my first hostel experience and was apprehensive about it. The staff in the lobby were very friendly during my entire stay, and were always willing to help if I had any questions. The first night the room was damp and smelled, and the beds squeaked quite loudly whenever someone would shift or roll over.
