  • Professional Review :Located in Austin's funky south side amid ethnic restaurants, nightclubs and vintage shops, this bungalow-style hotel is a spirited upstart in the heart of the capital's hip local scene. Although only a few blocks south of the gaudier Embassy Suites, this place feels a world away. Built in the 1930s on what was then the main thoroughfare into Austin, this hotel started out as the first motel in Austin. The owner, a former state prosecutor, rehabilitated this once derelict property, and the junkies and prostitutes took flight. These days, artists, musicians and Austin cognoscenti flock here. The southwestern decor is retro-chic with Zen-like simplicity and homey accents. Enclosed with a tall cedar fence, concrete, stucco, wood, custom ironwork, and beautifully planted and tended native plants have transformed the once prosaic grounds.Guests enter to discover a seemingly tranquil courtyard where a large communal table and butterfly chairs are set amid cacti, succulents and water lilies. Only steps away, along crushed granite pathways, palms shelter a small pool, fishpond ... more on professionaltravelguide.com

guess i'm not hip enough

Showed up here this past summer for a night in Austin -- 'was eager to stay at HSJ after hearing about it. Really cool spot, visually -- super clean design. But that's where the good stuff ends. 'Had tried to stay here a number of times and finally found a vacancy.

Weekend at the San Jose for Father's Day 2007

We have just returned from a couple nights' stay at the San Jose. I had always wanted to stay at the hotel, but had never had much luck obtaining a room until this particular weekend. I had visited the hotel bar and courtyards before, but was really thrilled to finally be able to get the whole "San Jose experience" . Due to the popularity of the place, you MAY be in 2 different rooms on consecutive nights(Our situation was due to making reservation fairly close to our stay, so your milage may vary). However, not to fear. They will hold your bags for you, so no near to shuffle your luggage back and forth to the car. Nice touch. We stayed on the side edge of the hotel in a standard room(close to South Congress and Jo's Coffee bar), however, I was pleasantly surprised at how it was not nearly as noisy as some previous reviewers make it out to be. The hotel location is also great, ... Waregl_in_TX, a user of Tripadvisor. Read full review on tripadvisor

worst place ever

What a racket! This place has hip rooms and cool design--and charges every dollar they can for it--but the staff, simply put, s*cks. Basic requests (directions, an iron, recommendations) were met with eye rolls and lackluster answers from too-cool-for-school ... mittenkitten, a user of citysearch.com.
