Description of Surrounding Area :Cape Charles on Virginia's Eastern Shore was established in 1884 when the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad extended its line southward through the Delmarva Peninsula. Cape Charles was the southern terminus from which steamships carried passengers and freight to Norfolk by barge. Today, a railbarge ferry link is still in operation. Many homes were constructed to house the railroad executives and workers. Most of the town was constructed between 1885 and 1920 giving Cape Charles one of the largest concentration of late-Victorian and turn-of-the century buildings on the East Coast. In 1989 the town was designated as a Historic District on the Virginia Landmarks Register and in 1991 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.The future looks bright for the small community with the opening of the Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course in 2001 and the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course to follow shortly thereafter.The ... more on Real Adventures
