Although considered a close suburb of Portland, Vancouver still manages to be more unique than Oregon's main vacation spot, offering a taste of Washington right across the border. With natural attractions just in arm's reach, this is a convenient setting for a quiet family vacation. Along with offering cheap lodging and even cheaper attractions, there is a lot to do here, including exploring the nearby Casade Mountains or visiting St. Helens. A great setting for any family vacation, Vancouver is an alternative to upstate Washington. Families this day choose Vancouver over Portland, and for good reason.
As for lodging that allows you plenty of room for weeks, locals suggest looking outside of town and towards the mountains. Plenty of hotels provide comfortable family accommodations inside of town, but they don't offer the same character as hotels located outside of Vancouver. This usually includes locally owned lodging facilities, such as small cabins or hotels. It is less modern than name-brand hotels in town, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Natural attractions should provide plenty of free entertainment for kids during the entire vacation.
